Three days in FUDCon Milan 2011 – Day 3

The last day started at 9:30 AM too. Attendees proposed their sessions/presentations in barcamp-style again. After going around to share and learn a lot of interesting topics, I attended the most interesting one of the day, where Pierros Papadias, the chair of Fedora Ambassadors Steering Commitee moderated a talk about Fedora Ambbassadors’ work and how to improve everything. A long list of things were proposed by everyone and then Robyn came. At that time, we were discussing about the responsibility of FamSCo and CommArch about reimbursement. Some people complained they had not got reimbursement yet athough they filed tickets and got all done as needed. Robyn came and she was so surprised why it had been happened. It was a very positive and constructive discussion and lastly, Robyn promised everything would be fine after this discussion. I didn’t know if there is any related thing, but in that such evening, two my open tickets have been solved, god blessed me 🙂

The day ended with the closed ceremony. FUDCon Milan 2011 was ended sucessfully. See you all at the next FUDCons, FADs as well as any events.

Three days in FUDCon Milan 2011 – Day 2

The day started at 9:30 AM with the open ceremony speech from Jared Smith, our Fedora Project Leader. Then everyone proposed their sessions/presentations in barcamp-style. All proposed sessions/presentations were voted and then arranged to five rooms, two big ones and three smaller ones.

The most impressive session in the day is the presentation “You could be the next FPL” by Jared Smith, the current FPL. Jared talked about FPL’s work, tools, his attempts to get tider with the community and organize a better one, his feelings, his thoughts, etc. A lot of questions were asked about FPL, the project and the community.

Beside that, I went around and share/learn a lot of interesting things with other speakers/attendees from the way Fedora made, Fedora packaging, D-bus message queue and the necessary changes in Spin process proposed by Christoph.

There were just about five people in that Christoph’s session. However, it’s so interesting and useful with me. I understood the current process how a spin made and knew the new changes Christoph proposed to make it better. I knew how to make my idea of a spin for disabled people to real. Just a thought of a long time idea, I would keep in touch with Christoph and others.

We had got a nice FUDPub in the evening. On the way to Troppapizza, I discussed with Robert Scheck about Ambassador Mentor work. It’s not easy but also not too difficult. One of the main things a mentor should remember that to keep new ambassadors active, mentor should wait for their requests, and at all time, help them to get their ideas and work done.

FUDPub was really nice. I ate a lot of Italian pizza, a lot :), with a big glass of Italian beer then some little more (over a litre, wow :). It was ended at over 1:00 AM so I, Christoph, Pierros and someone came back to the hotel while almost others go to other places for more beer :). It’s carzy and so fun 🙂

Three days in FUDCon Milan 2011 – Day 1

It’s really nice to be here for my first FUDCon. After a long flight and huge wait, Milan is here.

Checking in the UNA hotel, someone called me. Who? Then, Christoph Wickert, the man from Germany, who helps me a lot to make the first Fedora package. Robyn Bergeron checked in after me; then a long discussion with all Fedorians at the lobby. Everyone was in a hurry to meet others.

FUDCon Welcome Party started at 7:00 PM at Yguana Cafe’ Restaurant. I could see almost attendees here. Someone I contacted via mail, IRC, etc., some others not. It’s a nice party. I could taste nice Italian foods and Milano cocktails.

After the party, almost people join together to a small pub to drink beer. I had chance to taste three kinds of Milano/Italian beer. They are different from Hanoi beer. However, they are so nice, the first one was light, but the others were so strong 🙂
The first day was ended with a short walk to sightsee a corner of Milano. Nice city, nice hotel and especially, nice people. That’s our community!

Software Freedom Day Hanoi, 17 Sep 2011, time for freedom celebration

Welcome you all back.

SFD Hanoi 2011 has been done even more than successfully. We talked about FOSS and the freedom of software development and business all the day.

The day started at 8:45 AM (15 munites later than schedule) with celebration speech from Dr. Nguyen Hong Quang from IFI about SFD, FOSS, the community, etc.

Then, the main section of the day continued at 9:00 AM. MC Nguyen Ha “Yang” Duong introduced overall activities in the day, then he started the morning sessions with a barcamp-style vote campain.

All the morning presentations were introduced shortly by presenters then voted by partcipants one by one:

  1. Exploring FOSS world with Apache Maven (by Mr. Lai Trung Hieu from eXo Platform SEA): 19 votes.
  2. How to make MONEY with FOSS (by me): 30 votes (wow, me first :).
  3. Messaging and Collaboration with Zimbra Collaboration Suite (by me):  19 votes.
  4. Collaborative Development in FOSS community (by me): 14 votes :(.
  5. Ubuntu 11.04 and the Ubuntu-VN community (by Mr. Nguyen Ha Duong, Ubuntu-VN leader): 30 votes.
  6. Mozilla Localization (by Mr. Ha Quang Duong, HanoiLUG, Mozilla Localization team Vietnam): 17 votes.

As voting results, my presentation started the day :). I see it’s so hot to know how to make/earn money with FOSS :).  However, my presentation focused on the development/community and legal factors with a little business ones. In my view, to make a sustainable business, they should understand how FOSS developed in the community as well as the legal related issues; business factors should be similar with other types of business. This view was shared completely by participants. See my presentation here.

Next, Yang and Khanh introduced Ubuntu-VN community and live demonstrated Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity. Over a half of participants are Ubuntu-VN members so they were also interested in the session :).

After some other presentations, some new participants also registered their ones so a new voting time needed to be held. One after one, the morning session was over so fast.

After lunch, the activities in the day was back with a questions and answers session moderated by Mr. Le Trung Nghia from Ministry of Science and Technology, one of the most active FOSS activists in Vietnam with the well-known blog VNFOSS. A lot of interesting questions were asked and Mr. Nghia as well as all participants discussed a lot about FOSS and the community.

Next was the workshop time with three parallel workshops. Beside “Kernel hackings” (by Yang) and “Linux command lines” (by Ha Quang Duong), I got a mini workshop to introduce about Fedora Community, how to join with us, how to make contribution to Fedora Project. Then, I introduced how to make a Fedora package and I see that’s the most interesting thing to participants :). After the workshop, I considered to build a separated Fedora Contributors (at this time, Fedora users and contributors have still participated in local LUGs). I tried to introduce and PR the FAD-Hanoi 2011 (scheduled on October). However, finally, I thought I should try to build the separated Fedora users and contributors in Vietnam first. With a separated (small) community, we can do our own events and activities much easier.

The day was closed with an exciting bidding session where we sold four T-shirts with 200k VND :).

An exciting day was closed. Thanks to all my friends and participants who made this happened.

Software Freedom Day Hanoi 2011

SFD (Software Freedom Day), một trong những ngày hội lớn nhất trong năm của cộng đồng nguồn mở, là ngày cả thế giới tôn vinh Phần mềm tự do và Mã nguồn mở (FOSS). Đây là sự kiện thường niên và được tổ chức vào ngày thứ bảy thứ ba của tháng chín hằng năm. Sự kiện nhằm quảng bá về lợi ích, tính tiện dụng cũng như các tính năng của các phần mềm tự do tới người dùng. SFD cũng là dịp để những nguời yêu thích công nghệ, yêu mến FOSS gặp gỡ và trao đổi bàn luận về các vấn đề FOSS yêu thích.

Năm nay sự kiện này được tổ chức theo hình thức mới: Các diễn giả đăng ký chủ đề trước trên diễn đàn sau đó những chủ đề nào được quan tâm bình chọn nhiều nhất sẽ được thuyết trình tại buổi gặp mặt. Như thường lệ, SFD 2011 được nhóm người dùng GNU/Linux (gọi tắt là Hanoilug) với Trung tâm CNF của Tổ chức hợp tác đại học Pháp ngữ (AUF) cùng với các cá nhân và doanh nghiệp FOSS phối hợp đồng tổ chức. Monitoring Asterisk with Munin

Các bạn là một quản trị viên hệ thống hay một công ty chuyên cung cấp dịch vụ hỗ trợ, bảo trì? Các bạn đang phải chịu trách nhiệm quản trị và vận hành hệ thống thoại IP trên Asterisk (cài đặt phần mềm tự do nguồn mở Asterisk hoặc các appliance based trên nền Asterisk như Trixbox, Switchvox…)??

Hẳn không dưới một lần, các bạn gặp những vấn đề nhất định trong việc kiểm soát tình trạng hoạt động của hệ thống. Bạn không thể tự ngồi theo dõi hệ thống Asterisk của bạn 24/7, mà cần phải có những công cụ tự động phân tích tình trạng hoạt động, phân tích log của hệ thống, thông báo cho bạn khi có vấn đề xảy ra, thống kê, vẽ biểu đồ hoạt động của hệ thống theo thời gian thực…

Sau một thời gian tìm hiểu và áp dụng Munin vào hoạt động hiệu quả, tôi muốn chia sẻ với các bạn các kinh nghiệm của mình trong bài viết này; đặc biệt là phần cấu hình Munin plugin kết nối tới Asterisk hầu như chưa được nhắc đến nhiều trên các diễn đàn về Munin, Asterisk và các diễn đàn, cộng đồng FOSS khác.

Munin (http://munin-monitoring.org/) là một trong những phần mềm tự do nguồn mở hỗ trợ System Monitoring tốt hất hiện nay bới đặc tính dễ cài đặt, quản trị; với các chức năng theo dõi trạng thái hoạt động của các dịch vụ, hệ thống, chức năng thống kê, báo cáo, vẽ biểu đồ hoạt động của hệ thống…

Bài viết này nhằm trình bày các bước sơ bộ cài đặt và cấu hình Munin để theo dõi hoạt động của các hệ thống thoại IP based trên nền Asterisk.

Giả sử, bạn đã có một hệ thống Asterisk đang hoạt động bình thường. Trước tiên, bạn cần cài đặt, cấu hình Munin phục vụ theo dõi các hoạt động của các dịch vụ cơ bản như vùng đĩa, mạng, tiến trình, tài nguyên chung…

Sau khi Munin đã hoạt động, công việc chính bây giờ là cấu hình Munin theo dõi hoạt động của Asterisk.

Đi kèm trong phiên bản Munin mới nhất, đã có sẵn plugin chuyên theo dõi các hoạt động của Asterisk. Việc của bạn là cấu hình cho plugin này hoạt động, kết nối được vào hệ thống Asterisk để theo dõi, tập hợp và thống kê số liệu về tình trạng hoạt động.

Munin plugin kết nối tới Asterisk thông qua AMI (Asterisk Manager Interface). Vì vậy, trước hết, bạn phải cài đặt AMI trên máy chủ Asterisk của bạn (thường đã được cài sẵn) và tạo tài khoản AMI mới dành riêng cho Asterisk (bạn nên tra cứu tài liệu cấu hình Asterisk để biết thêm chi tiết).

Bước tiếp theo là kích hoạt Munin plugin cho Asterisk (Xem: http://munin-monitoring.org/wiki/plugin-conf.d); Trong file cấu hình /etc/munin/plugin-conf.d/asterisk sửa nội dung tương tự như sau (đây chính là điểm chính quan trọng nhất):

Munin-node có thể chạy ngay trên máy chủ Asterisk hoặc trên máy chủ khác (máy chủ Munin chính); trong trường hợp đó, chỉ cần điều chỉnh tham số env.host, kiểm tra quyền truy cập tài khoản AMI cũng như cấu hình mạng, tường lửa… để máy chủ Munin-node ngoài có quyền truy cập qua AMI.

Cấm xuất hàng sang Mỹ nếu vi phạm bản quyền

TT – Ngày 1-8, Cục Quản lý cạnh tranh (Bộ Công thương) cho biết một số bang của Mỹ bắt đầu áp dụng đạo luật vi phạm bản quyền sở hữu trí tuệ trong lĩnh vực công nghệ thông tin đối với doanh nghiệp xuất khẩu hàng hóa sang Mỹ có vi phạm về bản quyền.

Theo đạo luật này, hàng hóa của doanh nghiệp có vi phạm về bản quyền sẽ không được bán tại thị trường Mỹ. Hành vi vi phạm bản quyền được xét ở khâu sản xuất trực tiếp lẫn khâu phân phối, quảng bá hoặc bán sản phẩm.

Chẳng hạn, doanh nghiệp sản xuất xuất khẩu dệt may, giày, nhựa… khi sử dụng máy tính có cài các phần mềm liên quan đến Windows, Word, Excel (cũng như nhiều phần mềm khác có liên quan trong lĩnh vực sản xuất)… mà không có bản quyền thì sản phẩm sản xuất hoàn chỉnh vẫn bị xem là vi phạm.

Đạo luật nêu rõ doanh nghiệp Mỹ muốn nhập khẩu hàng hóa phải yêu cầu đối tác nước ngoài gửi thư bảo đảm cam kết không có vi phạm bản quyền. Nếu đối tác có vi phạm bản quyền, doanh nghiệp Mỹ có quyền đơn phương chấm dứt hợp đồng nhập khẩu mà không bị xem là vi phạm hợp đồng.

Theo ông Phạm Xuân Hồng – phó chủ tịch Hiệp hội Dệt may Việt Nam, hiện các doanh nghiệp sản xuất, xuất khẩu có quy mô phần lớn đều sử dụng phần mềm liên quan đến quy trình sản xuất có bản quyền.

After 10 Years, Trying Fedora Again; Wireless Fails and Fixes

I started using Linux back in 1997 when a buddy and I put Slackware, floppy by floppy, onto a Pentium 133.  I didn’t start using it full time until a couple years later, when Microsoft started requiring online registration with product keys.  Since then, I’ve used Red Hat, Gentoo, Debian, Arch and Ubuntu.  I abandoned Red Hat because of “dependency hell”, which the other distributions avoided entirely.  So, it’s been about 10 years, and as I’ve tracked Red Hat’s dismissal, and subsequent rewarming to, the desktop market, I have noticed that Red Hat, Fedora Core, and finally Fedora have learned from Ubuntu and made a better experience for the casual user.

So I installed the just-released Constantine to see how it measured up to my beloved Debian-derivatives I’ve been using the past few years.  I installed it on a netbook that I love: the Asus EEE 1002HA.  The verdict?  Yeah, it just works.  It has a smooth boot up, detected screen resolution well, has good sound support, allowed me to customize tap-to-click and scrolling on the touchpad, and allowed me to set up dvorak and rebind caps-lock to control simply and easily.  What didn’t work so well?  The Atheros AR928x chipset, which is why I’m posting this.

Short version: the Atheros AR928x is supported by the open-source code contributed by Atheros to MadWifi under the driver name “ath9k”, which is the kernel module Fedora 12 loads to support this hardware.  Unfortunately, the version included is a bit behind the times, and causes odd intermittent connectivity issues when associating with access points, which effectively makes the wireless on the machine next to useless.  The good news is that it is easy to fix.  Here we go:

  1. Update.  Get root on the command line and type ‘yum update‘.
  2. Install your development tools so you can compile things.  As root: ‘yum groupinstall “Development Tools” “Legacy Software Development”‘.
  3. Head over to the download site for compat-wireless and download the latest version of the ath9k driver.  Uncompress it.  Navigate to the directory it is in on the command line.
  4. Select the ath9k driver: ‘./scripts/driver-select ath9k‘
  5. Build: ‘make‘
  6. Install: ‘make install‘
  7. Unload your current ath9k driver: ‘make unload‘
  8. Load the new driver: ‘modprobe ath9k‘ (or simply reboot)

There were lots of discussions across the web about various hacks and methods to get ath9k to play nicely with the AR928x chipset, but this seemed to be the most straightforward approach to me, and it seemed to work really well, so I thought I’d post it here in hopes it would be useful to someone.  Happy hacking!

Fedora 15 Release Party series

Chỉ còn chưa đầy 24 giờ nữa chuỗi liên hoan chào mừng Fedora 15 chính thức phát hành sẽ chính thức khởi động tại Việt Nam.

Chuỗi sự kiện được tổ chức bởi cộng đồng người sử dụng và đóng góp trong dự án Fedora tại Việt Nam, với sự hỗ trợ của dự án/cộng đồng Fedora.

Sự kiện đầu tiên sẽ được tổ chức tại Hà Nội vào 6h30 chiều mai, thứ 6, 27/5 tại LollyBooks Café, Số 18, ngõ 131, Thái Hà, Hà Nội, Việt Nam, với sự phối hợp của cộng đồng HanoiLUG và các Công ty phần mềm tự do nguồn mở tại Hà Nội.

Với một loạt các hoạt động xuyên suốt trong Ngày Mở Việt Nam (Vietnam Open Day) 2011, trong đó có chương trình tiệc chào mừng Fedora 15, sự kiện hứa hẹn sẽ mang lại một cái nhìn tươi mới về phần mềm tự do nguồn mở và hoạt động của cộng đồng tới những người tham gia nói riêng và toàn xã hội Việt Nam nói chung.

Tiếp sau sự kiện tại Hà Nội, liên hoan chào mừng Fedora 15 chính thức phát hành tại Huế sẽ được tổ chức vào 9h sáng Chủ Nhật, 29/5 tại Nhà Tri Thức Huế, số 1 Lê Hồng Phong, thành phố Huế. Sự kiện được phối hợp tổ chức bởi cộng đồng HueLUG và Nhà Tri Thức Huế, cùng với nhiều hoạt động của cộng đồng phần mềm tự do nguồn mở tại Huế, với hy vọng sẽ mang tới Huế những thông tin mới mẻ về Fedora nói riêng, Linux và phần mềm tự do nguồn mở nói chung.

Cuối cùng trong chuỗi sự kiện là chương trình liên hoan tại thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, được tổ chức vào 5h chiều thứ 5, 2/6 4h chiều thứ 6, 3/6 tại Hội trường Trường đại học Sư Phạm thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, 280 An Dương Vương, phường 4, quận 5, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, với sự phối hợp, hỗ trợ tích cực từ cộng đồng Fedora tại TpHCM, Trường ĐH Sự Phạm TpHCM và SaigonLUG.

Đây là lần thứ 2 sự kiện được tổ chức tại TpHCM (lần đầu vào tháng 11/2010, liên hoan chào mừng Fedora 14 phát hành). Hy vọng đây sẽ là sự quay trở lại “ngọt ngào” của những người đã, đang và sẽ cổ súy, đóng góp cho Fedora nói riêng và phần mềm tự do nguồn mở nói chung; cùng đồng hành cùng tập thể giáo viên, cán bộ công nhân viên và các bạn sinh viên trường ĐH Sự Phạm, vì một tương lai “MỞ” cho ngành giáo dục nói riêng cũng như toàn xã hội nói chung.

Tiếp nối sự thành công của Open Day lần thứ nhất năm 2010, và tăng cường các hoạt dộng đa dạng của cộng đồng FOSS tại Hà Nội, ngày 27/05 sắp tới, công ty iWay, eXo Platform, Asianux và một số thành viên tích cực của HanoiLUG sẽ tiếp tục phối hợp tổ chức Open Day lần thứ hai.

Chương trình Open Day 2 sẽ bao gồm các nội dung sau:

  • Quản lý phát triển phần mềm với Redmine kết hợp TestLink; Giới thiệu LibreOffice 3.4
  • Ra mắt Fedora 15
  • Ứng dụng mã nguồn mở trên điện thoại di động
  • Hệ điều hành Asianux
  • Cộng đồng Ubuntu-VN giới thiệu
  • …

Ngoài ra, những trao đổi, bàn thảo xung quanh việc ứng dụng FOSS cũng sẽ được đề cập. Tất cả các hoạt động trong Open Day đều hướng tới mong muốn xây dựng cộng đồng, làm cho FOSS tại Hà Nội nói riêng và Việt Nam nói chung trở nên gần gũi và có tính ứng dụng thực tiễn cao.
